statements from others
"river has always been the kind of girl to jump into something without thinking, she did it all the time when she was a child and even now i see her doing it. yes, it worries me but there's nothing i can or want to do about it, it's who she is and that's not something i want to change. she has always done things her own way and given no shits about what other people have to say about it. when she was a teenager she was a bit of an outcast, she had a few friends but she was never a part of the popular gang - i don't know why since she definitely had the qualities those people look for - but she never let it bother her. some of the kids were mean to her and her friends, i saw it a few times, but she brushed it aside and didn't care. she's still like that now and i love it." - katherine orlov, mother.
"i see river more than i thought i would now that she's an engaged woman. she comes to see me a lot, it's hard for me to go to her what with my condition and all, i suppose that's why she comes to me. she has never treated me any differently that she used to before the accident, she really makes me feel like the wheelchair doesn't matter. there's more to her than that, but to me that's all that matters - the fact that she cares about her old man and makes the effort for me even though i don't expect her to." - nikolai orlov, father.
"river orlov is a nut case. so i may have forgotten her birthday after we'd been dating for almost a year, but come on it was her first birthday since we'd been dating. she was mad and i just don't get it, it's just a birthday, get over it. she must hold a grudge too, because every time i see her she gives me a look that is full of hate. when we finally ended i slept with her cousin, she didn't care that i forgot her birthday." - jack, ex-boyfriend.
"me and river had some great times together when we were younger but i haven't seen her for a while. we'd sit around a make stupid, lame jokes about crap that didn't matter but it was great. she was a great friend, i don't know why we haven't caught up more recently. she's probably busy with life, i always thought that she'd be successful, she was always the one to go and get what she wanted instead of waiting around for something to happen. for a s long as i've known her she's done what she can to get the things that she wants, a real hard worker. but she always knew when to give up, especially when she ran headfirst into something that just wasn't going to work out. she did that a lot too, run into things headfirst before thinking about it, but she was always the first to say that she didn't think about it. that might possibly be her one flaw and she freely admits it. okay so she probably has other flaws but i don't know about them." - jessie, childhood friend.
"river is a hard worker, she has to be to hold a job at this hotel. we get rich idiots here all the time and they treat us like dirt and we have to take it, no matter what, or we're gone. we have to deal with their every problem and receive abuse when something isn't right with the smallest thing. okay so they're not all like that but there's at least one every week and it's very difficult. but river takes it with a smile on her face and rarely falters, when she does it's usually a personal insult that causes it, the lowest of the low from the guest. she's great to just hang out with too, after aa shift she'll always be up for stopping by a bar down the road for a few drinks unless she has somewhere to be, which isn't all that often actually." - craig, co-worker.
"considerate, that's probably the best word to use to describe river. and messy. i know she's not the only one who lives in that house but she's one of two and i've been inside and there isn't a lot of organisation. it looks like things are just thrown wherever. it's not dirty, everything is clean, it's just messy. i think there was one time i was inside and it was organised - to an extent - and tidy and it was great, but i think one of their parents were visiting which is reason enough to tidy up i suppose. but no, she is considerate and there isn't ever much noise after ten at night. but she does leave early in the morning sometimes and get home late at night which can be a bit of a bother but it's not my place to complain about that." - owen, neighbour.
key events in past
holidays in russia: the orlovs made multiple trip to russia to visit family and old friends once they had relocated the america (roughly one year before river's birth). these trip started when river was two, before then her mother had insisted that the young one was too young to travel so her father had agreed that family trips to his homeland would wait until she was old enough for her mother to allow her to travel - but that didn't stop him from going on his own. most of these trips were to visit river's father's parents and brother in moscow, sometimes they ventured away from the city to visit an old friend of her father's in the small town where he grew up, but that was a rare occurrence. right from the beginning river loved her grandmother and was always excited when the family visited her - she thought her grandfather was scary so she was less excited to see him (until she was ten when she realised he wasn't all that scary at all). she was spoiled by her grandmother who would buy her all the things, much against her parents' approval, which just made the girl love her more and more. a strong bond connected river to her grandmother over the years and when she was almost in her teens the two began writing letters to one another and sending them via post, this was especially done when there was a long time between visits. river was nineteen when her grandmother died of old age. she was devastated and spent a week inside her small apartment, not even going to work (she called in sick for the week which in turn caused her employer to be rather pissed at her which caused him to work her extra hard for the next month or so). she hasn't been to russia since the funeral, a week after her grandmother died.
the car accident: she was fourteen when her father was taking her to her dance class (that was a thing she did for a few months before deciding that it wasn't for her, funnily enough it was right after the accident that she decided that..). it was the very same route that they had taken for the two months before, but all the other times there hadn't been that one speeding driver who was on the run from the police. the speeding car entered an intersection as river and her father were on it and the two cars collided, the speeding car hitting river's father's car a little back from where the driver's seat was. it was all a blur to her, but the result was hospital for everyone involved - and then jail for the guy in the speeding car because he had robbed a store and was running away from the police. the whole thing resulted in rivers father being confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life after being paralysed from the waist down and river having a small fear of cars for a few years (but that is all gone now, but she does still have a bit of driving anxiety from time to time).
that party: it was the very first high school party she had been invited to. she was excited and nervous but mostly excited and a bit flattered because she was in her senior year and really she should have been invited to one a lot earlier (she hadn't been the most popular teen in school). she had dressed in a somewhat revealing dress because she wanted to impress everyone, which was the first and last time she did any such thing. she drank a lot of alcohol that night, but wasn't that what people did at these party things? during the night she met a guy, his name was trent, he was nice and he helped her around a lot once the alcohol had taken affect (she was most definitely a bit of a lightweight back then, not so much these days though). she thought trent was a real nice guy, until he started making moves on her (though at the time she still thought he was a super nice guy). as the night progressed he got more and more intense and she was all okay with it, being drunk and all. she ended the night by sleeping with him and that is the story of how she drunkenly lost her virginity to some guy she'd never met and hasn't seen again.
short stint in los angeles: once year, that was how long she lived in los angeles. she had decided that the move might possibly help her chase the dream of becoming famous (because what twenty year old doesn't want that?) so she had relocated to the opposite side of the country all on her own. while there she made a few friends, found out the hard way that success does not come easy to all, but she did wait tables at a fancy restaurant in beverly hills (possibly the highlight of her life). once the year had gone she gave up and moved back to new york with her parents. she started a receptionist job at a not so great motel where she worked for a few years before getting a job at one of the high class hotels, where she still works to this day.
engagement: they met at the crappy motel where she worked, he was just staying a few nights before he was able to move into the house he had just bought (he came from a rich family and the house was basically all he allowed his parents money to buy for him). he was humorous and kind to her, unlike most of the people they had stay at the crappy motel. she had jokingly told him that they should have coffee sometime and when he checked out he told her that when she finished her shift they'd do just that. she was shocked and not sure whether she should agree or not, but she did and it all went great. they got along amazingly and agreed to make it a regular thing. six months later (june 2011) the two were dating. she moved into his house a year later. he proposed on their third anniversary and she could not have been more excited and happy about something. they are planning a wedding, but have no set date as of yet. all the excitement.
