How it came to be...
"Ok kiddo, I need one more thing from you before you leave. Can you draw me a picture?" A woman inquired as sat next to a little boy on a couch inside a cozy looking room. Her voice was calming and soft, as she spoke, the words rolling easily off of her tongue. Pieces of paper and crayons were scattered on the large, worn oak table in front of the two.
"Okay, what do you want me to draw?" The young boy looked at the woman, a sparkle in his big, brown eyes. His tone was full of enthusiasm and he had an eagerness to please, just like a dog, loyal to its owner.
"Draw your family for me, alright?" The woman asked, smiling warmly at the boy, placing a piece of paper in front of him neatly.
"Alright." The boy nodded quickly, and grabbed a sky-blue crayon. He drew a family of lumpy, misshaped stick figures, which, was normal for a 5 year old. He quickly added some details, finishing by drawing smiles on their faces. He scribbled names over the heads of the forms and handed the paper over to the woman, a cheeky smile on his face. "Do you like it?" He asked, eagerly awaiting her reply.
The woman studied the drawing, making out the names of the figures. She wrote something down on her clipboard, mumbled to herself as she finished up, clicking her pen "Yes I do." She nodded and smiled, as the door slowly creaked open. "Time to go, make sure to remind mommy you have another appointment scheduled next week, ok?"
Who he is today...
After having gone to a counselor and psychologist a majority of his childhood and adolescence, Mathias knew that was what he wanted to do. To help people, and really listen to their problems when no one else will. To make an impact on someone else's life like his counselor did for him. Mathias had always been a good listener anyway, of course there was the fact he had selective-mutism as a child. His mother, brother, and counselor were the only 3 people he would talk to, up until age 15. Doctors had had suspicions of autism or regression when he started his bout, only to find out later he was just a selective-mute at age 7. Throughout the years he opened up a bit, but even at 18 he was still had a lot of social anxiety, and almost gave up on his dream as a result of that. At 17, he joined the military for 5 years, so he could get his college paid for. The results of joining, though, were a bit more tragic than expected. After watching his friends practically be slaughtered in war, he developed PTSD. Though it seems to have passed for the most part, he still gets recurring nightmares and had increased anxiety and stress at any given time. His passion for his job, though, overrules any of his own problems, and he mostly helps in the trauma department. Children are probably his favorite to work with, because he can relate so closely, but he loves helping anyone. Nothing is more satisfying than changing someone's life. Though he may seen rather stoic and indifferent at first, as he gets to know a client he is much more warm and inviting.
Don't let his cold expression get you, he is a big softie, and has been known to cry on occasion. He'll probably shed a tear or two watching nature documentaries. You'll probably never see him cry though, since he avoids any situation where he could possibly be vulnerable. After Mathias got out of the Military, he was able to go to college and fulfill his dream job as a trauma counselor and psychologist. He was finally able to move from his home state of South Dakota to a job offer in New York, a big relief to get out of that small town. With a place to live and his best friend (his dog), he'd tell you his life is pretty much complete. There's still a bit of a hole in that fulfilled lifestyle though. Being a workaholic his entire life hasn't got him very far in the romance and love department. He has a few issues when it comes to dating. First of all, he's a very friendly and personable person, but he panics when he notices an interaction surpassing what he considers platonic. Then there's the dreaded 'c-word'. C-o-m-m-i-t-m-e-n-t. It's not really clear why that thought scares him so much, but it practically gives him a panic attack to think about it. Matt can't bear the thought of something that could leave to marriage, since his parent's marriage was so broken. You can thank his father's drinking problem for that. Just don't mention the 'c-word' to Mathias, unless you want to scare him away forever. He has been in relationships before, but all of his previous relationships have been unhealthy for him, with women who never really cared about much else than a pretty face. Mathias just isn't lucky when it comes to love. He hates leading people on, but he doesn't have the heart to tell a woman off, even if he is getting uncomfortable. Still, even with all his qualms with it, he does have a yearning for love. Maybe one day someone will break him, a man can dream, right?
10 Traits...
{Considerate}
Mathias cares deeply about others, and always seemed to know what to say. He'll always try his best to be kind and help others feel better. The downside to that is that he will sometimes tell a little white lie to spare feelings.
{Disorganized}
You'd think being a counselor and all he would need to be organized. Mathias would disagree. Even though he has a mess of clutter, he always knows where everything is. Okay fine, almost everything.
{Reliable}
Need someone to confide in? Mathias is your man. Whether he's at work or not, he's there for you. If you ever need to vent at 3 A.M., go ahead and give Mathias a call. You can always count on him to be a shoulder to cry on.
{Clumsy}
He's about as graceful as Bambi walking on ice. Who knows why, he was in the military for 5 years after all. You can count on Mathias to be that one guy who trips walking up the stairs or runs into a pole walking down the street. Just don't take him ice-skating unless you want to spend a night in the emergency room.
{Silly}
Even though he's a serious workaholic, he's pretty silly, especially if he's comfortable around someone. You'll probably find him making jokes and puns that either are really terrible, or that take a special sense of humor to appreciate.
{Forgiving}
Too much so for his own good. Mathias will forgive about any mistake, even if it's a really bad one. If someone was to stab him in the back, he'd probably accept the first measly apology he was given.
{Charming}
A rather useful skill to have as a counselor working closely with people. Mathias definitely knows how to charm people, whether it's to get his way or make a good impression.
{Patient}
Mathias is unbelievably patient, as a result of working with younger children and shaken people over his career. If anybody can keep their cool in a situation, it's Mathias.
{Stubborn}
This can be perceived as both positive and negative. In the positive, Mathias won't give up something he believes in, whether that be a belief, a cause, or even a patient. In the negative, it can be hard to change his mind once it's made.
{Self-critical}
'Is that patient not showing improvement? It's all my fault, my methods aren't working. What the hell is wrong with me?' Mathias will criticize himself quite constantly, and will almost always put the blame on himself if a patient doesn't show any signs of improvement.
