bexley came as a surprise, to everyone. her mother, ashley was told at a young age that she would never be able to have children. ashley met a man older than her when she was twenty-seven. it wasn't even a week later and they were living together. it was about a year later and she was pregnant to much to her and everyone else's shock. the doctors kept a close eye on her the whole time, especially in the early days of her pregnancy. bexley was born nine weeks early, she was only four pounds when she was born, but she was completely healthy besides her weight. it wasn't long after she was born that her father was arrested for five counts of auto theft, six counts of assault, and one count of second degree murder. ashley was shocked, she had no idea about him, but as soon as she found out she moved out of the house they were living in, knowing it was dirty money that got them there. she found a small apartment and dedicated her life to her miracle baby.
as a child bexley never understood why all other other people were different from her. her mother never drew attention to the fact that everyone had better clothes, better cars, and more food than they always had. she didn't realize it until a classmate made fun of her on the first day of kindergarten when she didn't have pretty new dresses or shoes like the other girls. she had a hand-me-down dress from a yard sale and scuffed dirty shoes that were too big for her. the teachers always tried to help her. they knew that bex came a single income family. her mother worked as a waitress and barely made enough in their small town. her father.. well she didn't know where he was, but everyone else knew he was in jail. it only got worse as she got older. she was teased because her family couldn't afford the expensive things that other families could. it wasn't until high school that she didn't care anymore. she knew her mother tried the best she could. bex got a job after school starting when she was fourteen to help with the bills and other expenses. she didn't know her mother had been saving money since before she was born to send her to college. she had the grades, so that helped get her scholarships. bex never knew how she would be able to repay her mother for everything she had ever done.
the move to new york city was somewhat brutal. she had a small bag of all of her belongings. she took the train from upper state new york. she had just graduated college, and was headed to new york city to strike out and find a job. she had gone to school for business, she wanted to own a store. she wasn't sure what, but she was thinking about it. she sat in her horribly uncomfortable seat, shifting her weight. she pulled out a book and started to read it, trying to share the arm rest with the person sitting next to her. it felt like too long, when the train pulled into penn station. she stood up and her back cracked, she stretched herself before she grabbed her bag and headed off the train. all the people, it was a lot to take on, but she strode through the station with confidence. an hour later she was in her new apartment. it was barely bigger than her dorm room in college, the sink constantly dripped or that's what she found out, there was a dirty mattress on the floor and an old couch. those were the first things to go. she got them out of the building without help. with savings, she explored this new city. she found thrift stores, bought a love seat, a nice winged back recliner, a real bed with a new mattress and a few other things that she needed all for under three hundred dollars. on the way back to the apartment, she got lost, but she found a sign in the window for an expensive store that needed a salesperson. she walked out with a job and she was excited for life. she started her new job by the end of the week, her apartment was turning up nicely, she even fixed the sink.
it all started with a tie.
just a little over two years before. Calvin Martins walked into the clothing store that Bexley York worked in. she was new to the city and enjoyed the environment, all the people. she didn’t see a wedding ring, he was a good looking and charming man, he was older than her, his accent was british. but, that didn’t matter. she sold him a very expensive silk tie and that was it. the next day there he was again. bex teased him; did he really need another new tie? but, instead he asked her out on a date. normally, she wasn’t that sort of girl, to even try and get a man at work, especially one that was that attractive. she found out that night at dinner, he wasn’t just a pretty face he travelled for work, but lived in London, most of his business was in New York City. she was discouraged, he just wanted an easy lay. well, she wasn’t going down that easy. the night ended with a very passionate kiss, but she ended it at the door. he surprised her the next morning with dozens of roses at her door, and a carriage ride that night. she stayed strong and ended it at the door again. this went on for a week; her will gave out the night he was in town when he told her he would be back in a few weeks and he wanted to see if this would work out. he felt something different with her.. okay okay, she shouldn’t have believed that horrible line. but she caved and they spent a very long romantic night together.
fast forward five weeks. she suspected, but she didn’t want to tell him, she had a doctor’s appointment next week to find out. the romance was high and they didn’t play any games this time. she knew already that Calvin was going to be trouble, but she wanted to play. a girl that came from nothing and barely scraped by, liked to be spoiled and bought fabulous things… she was easily sucked in.
a month later he was back again and she had to break the news. their first night together had resulted in an oops. she was pregnant. 9 weeks to be exact. he flipped out like she was afraid he would, he called her horrible names and told her she needed to get rid of the problem because she just did it to trap him. she yelled back and finally asked him to leave. she didn’t want to see him again. and she didn’t… for a few weeks… he showed up at her work, just like the first time. asking for a tie.. he swept her away after work, she tried to fight him, she was angry at him. she didn’t know what he was up to but he took her to a huge penthouse, it was much more than she could ever afford. she was confused of course, but he explained that work in NY was picking up and he was renting it. he wanted her to live there with him, so they could be together whenever possible while he was there and when he was gone, he would at least not have to worry about her living in that horrible apartment she was currently living in. she was fully moved in the next day and they celebrated with a steamy night. she got him for two weeks before he left again.
she had a very healthy ten pound baby boy, Tate Oliver York, she refused to give her son his last name if he wasn’t going to commit fully. Calvin wasn’t there for the birth, but he did make sure she had the best doctors and a private room at the best hospital. a year and a half later Calvin still travels back and forth. sometimes she thinks of leaving, but when she tries to talk about it with Calvin he threatens to take Tate away from her and that idea terrifies her. she loves her son more than anything.
she hasn’t told anyone yet, but she is dreading telling Calvin she’s just found out she’s pregnant again. she has no idea about the bomb that is going to be dropped on her in the next few months. but, she is refusing to be a kept woman and wants to get out of her unhealthy and very complicated relationship before it’s too late.
