”Calvin… no, I don’t think you understand…” she tried to keep her voice calm for Tate, but she knew he understood, at least he understood she wasn’t happy. ”Darling, you need to understand business is important here.. the office in London needs my attention right now..” the deep british voice said on the other end. bexley took a deep breath, she hated when he called her darling, she let it out slowly, willing him to understand. ”Cal…” she paused looking across the table of the diner at those bright blue eyes of her young son. ”I don’t like when you decide what I do and don’t understand…” she paused as he interrupted her. ”Darling, it’s late and I don’t want to have this argument with you again… I’ll see if there is any way I can take a weekend off in the next few weeks… then we can talk..” his tone suddenly became hushed and she wondered if he was at the office.. or worse… she strained to listen to the silence, then she thought she heard a second voice. ”I love you…I’ll call you soon…” he added after a long silent pause. before she could comment he had hung up on the other end. she looked at Tate from across the table and gave him a smile that she forced to look happy. ”daddy says hi.. and that he misses you..” she lied easily to him. it killed her to lie to him, but she didn’t want to hurt him, since the whole conversation lasted less than two minutes and he didn’t once ask how his son was doing. she was beginning to wonder if he really did love her, she felt like a burden. she really hated when he called her darling. she hadn’t seen in over a month… and she was late.. she kept track of that like her life depended on it… she was going to get an appointment at the doctor set up. she would need to get a pregnancy test, she might as well go get a few after dinner. she sat across from the boosted Tate who was munching on a French fries and chicken nuggets. she had a simple Caesar salad in front of her that she barely touched. she lost her appetite after her brief conversation with Calvin. they had been spending the who day together, she had a day off and she pulled him out of daycare so she could actually spend quality time with her son. she hated staying in the penthouse, it felt like a prison without Calvin there… okay if felt like a prison when he was there.. she had gotten every newspaper at the newspaper stand that had been around the corner from the diner. she wasn’t going to be a kept lady, just waiting for a man to return. That wasn’t who she was, she was just afraid that Calvin really would take Tate away from her. Now she was potentially pregnant and he could take that away from her as well… which was terrifying. Tate was the most important person in her life and this baby would be no different. |
