”I know that in our previous sessions we’ve talked about your family life.. would you like to continue there?
Anastasia gave a small smirk. Did she really want to continue down that road? She sat there, legs crossed properly. ”Sure.. I mean.. what else would I be paying you for.” she said with a small laugh. ”I’m not sure what else there is to say.. I hate to sound so under privileged first world problems.” she said softly. ”My parents are very determined. My father is a Neurosurgeon, one of the best… I umm.. just found out that he was offered a position here in the city at New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell… So.. my parents will be moving from France to here in about a month and that terrifies me… My mother in turn had taken a job offer at Columbia University and is going to be teaching in the Bio-medical Sciences, which she had her doctoral in…” her shoulders shrugged softly. ”I ah… I don’t know how I’m going to handle them being in Manhattan or where ever they’re going to live… but at least before I had an entire ocean between us.” she knew it sounded horrible but she really didn’t know how she would handle it. ”I know that they mean well… I mean.. my whole family… they’re all very controlling and they were highly disappointed when I declared a double major for journalism and photojournalism...but I mean, I got my Master's in Journalism..” she added with a small smirk. ”I mean.. I went into book editing, because I really enjoy it… and they were even more disappointed when I took a job at an unknown book publishing company… which not long after had a hostile takeover by the Hollis Publishing Company in Paris… which is owned by my grandfather, my mother’s father… they had to buy this little unknown company to make sure they can control my life.” she said with a small sigh. ”like I said first world problems.”
The lady chuckled quietly. “I’ve heard this from you…and I just want to tell you that anyone would have cracked under the pressure of the expectations they hold you too.”
Ana bit the inside of her cheek. She didn’t want people to pity her. ”Well.. I suppose I should mention that there had been.. discussions and by discussions I mean, them telling me.. that my life needs to be perfect when they get here… in not so many words. But, I’ve been away from France for a long time now.. I mean.. I was sent Charterhouse in England at the first opportunity. It wasn't horrible, I learned three different languages there; I already spoke French and English..so I took German and Spanish.. Then I went to the University of Southern California and majored in Journalism..” She looked at her with a shrug. ”I haven’t really let my parents into my life… I know they think my life is fabulous. I don’t really date because who has time for that? I have a ton of pets, because I was never allowed to have pets growing up… I dated a guy in college that had snakes! It was so cool… and I realized my parents hated it because they were dirt creatures, so I just started to love them more.. I have six snakes all together; I have two California King snakes, two Ball Pythons, a banded king snake, and a corn snake.” she said with a small grin, seeing the startled look on her face. ”I know since the last time we talked, I got a new California King snake a baby.. and the banded king snake is new..” She bit the inside of her cheek. ”I have a tarantula…” she said with a small laugh, getting that look again. ”I have Charlie, my mutt.. and Kyle… the Chihuahua… and umm.. I just got a pit bull puppy… well I found her when I was walking home.. well Charlie and Kyle did, and they adopted her… I don’t know what I’m going to call her yet..” she said with a small smile. Okay, so she was an animal lover. That was easy to see.
”So you’re worried about what will happen when they move here? What expectations do you think they’ll have?”
Ana sighed softly ”Well, I’m twenty-five. By the time they were my age… or my mother was my age.., my father was in medical school and mother was working on her PhD.” her shoulders shrugged slightly. “They were engaged and everyone was happy, my grandparents approved the match, so they got the okay from the people who wrote the checks…” she sighed, thinking she should probably explain. ”My father’s family, they are extremely wealthy; they have been known to arrange marriages… It was all hush hush because anyone in the Barton family shouldn’t need anything arranged for them…. well my father was up to be arranged, they married off my aunts before they were twenty… well, my mother’s family is actually from South Africa, a very wealthy family… she and father met at a social function.. and they hit it off.. they had to court, of course, it was expected of them from both of their families.. six months in, both families met they were given the approval and them the engagement happened. Luckily, for them, they didn’t need it forced.” she said softly. ”I suppose it’s not their fault, my grandparents are the ones pulling the strings.” she paused, before continuing. ”Anyways, I was raised Roman Catholic…so… all that is expected..” she thought about it all. ”I’ll be going to Mass with them, I’ll have to start confessing my sins…Sunday night dinners… They’ll be expecting me to have a wonderful boyfriend…someone rich and successful..” she shuddered softly. ”I’m afraid there are no contenders in that department, so I’ll be forced to meet every single son of my parent’s friends from my age up to early forties.. It will be horrible… I’ll be expected to attend every social mixer and be a proper lady in society.” she smirked lightly as she spoke again. ”I’m not lady like… I’m not proper… I don’t wear a bra if I don’t have to, because you know I’m young and perky…I tend to wear boy clothes when I can because they fit and they are so much more comfortable… I am an avid clothes borrower with men… If he leaves a hoodie or a shirt, you can bet I won’t ever give it back.” she said with a small laugh. ”I mean.. I dress professionally for work… but we are pretty laid back there.. even though my maternal grandparents own it now.. They rarely come by… I guess that’s a plus, it really is kind of great though, they have a lot of money and because we’re part of their large publishing company, everyone get paid so much more… I think some salaries have doubled in the last year.. which is great for those that have families to support.” she shrugged her shoulders. No one at work knew it was her family that took over, since it was her maternal grandparents and they had a different surname. Most people were shocked when she told then her family was made of money; she had trust funds collecting money, and her father alone made over 800K a year, granted he was a top surgeon. Her mother was an amazing professor, who didn’t even make half what her father made teaching, but she had written several books on the subject of biomedical science and raked in at least half of her father’s salary a year from book sales. Everyone always said Ana was too down to Earth to be a rich kid. ”I know the pressure will be on, for a marriage and children.. my mother had me when she was twenty-eight.. my father was thirty, so I know it will be expected. they want me to be on the same track as they were and well, when mother was my age she was getting her PhD and planning the wedding event of the season.. I’ve seen pictures, it was honestly beautiful..” she said with a small laugh. ”I’ll give her credit, my mother can throw a fancy ass party, she should have been a party planner..” she added with another laugh. ”But seriously… I guess I’m just hoping they don’t try anything crazy.. I can handle going to church, the parties, and Sunday dinners.. But, I don’t want them to come barging into my life and trying to change everything I’ve worked so hard for.” she said finally, unsure if she even answered her question.
”So when they get to the states… what will you do if they come in with a brand new and planned life for you?”
Ana sighed, the idea terrified her. ”I don’t know…” she said quietly, trying to think it over. ”My parents are controlling people. They like everything to have a place and to be perfect…” she paused. ”However, I hope that they won’t… They were able to make their own decisions and mistakes in life… They weren’t forced into anything, so I hope they won’t force me into anything..” she paused again. ”Maybe when they see that I’m happy with my life.. and I’m not struggling, they’ll let me control my own life.” she said finally. Something clicked as she thought about it, her grandparents. If she thought her parents were controlling her grandparents were even worse. ”Unfortunately, my grandparents still have a great deal of pull in my parents lives.. and I’m afraid they won’t be pleased… they have a great deal of pull in my life…” she added the last bit, knowing it was true. ”Even if my parents are understanding, my grandparents might not be, and they control a lot of my life.. they control my job, my salary, and I know they have the power to make sure I either thrive in the literature world or fail miserably and end up living on the streets.” she said quietly. ”Without a job I would have to rely on my trust funds and.. well they control those as well.” she hated admitting to it, she really had no control in her life.
”A trust fund baby… That is probably a lot of pressure.. No judgment.. I didn’t have much help from my family, when it seems like you were given everything. I don’t envy you though, all that pressure. Plus, I hate not having control.”
Ana’s look hardened slightly, ”Things were handed to me, yes, I can’t deny that. I had the best schooling, tutors, and I never wanted for anything… she paused, ”But, I worked incredibly hard for everything. I worked hard to be the perfect daughter, student, employee… I try to be a perfect friend… I don’t know…. I mean.. I’m their only child and if I disappoint them, they have no one else to fall back on.. Trying to be perfect is impossible… which might be the reason I’m paying three hundred dollars an hour to listen and help me…” she said softly. She took a deep breath to collect herself. ”I don’t want to disappoint my parents.. or my grandparents… because I know they’ve done everything in their powers to give me everything.. they made it possible to be where I am today.” she said finally. She knew she needed to make them proud, even if she couldn’t be perfect. She was going to try her hardest. Ana was upset now, her stomach felt like it was in knots. She looked around before she suddenly stood up and grabbed her messenger bag. ”I’m sorry.. I... I need to go.” she said softly before she turned on her heels and walked out of the office. She didn't like that she didn't really have control on her life. Sure, she had trust funds. When she was ready she could buy a house or apartment outright. If she ever got married, the wedding would be completely be paid for. She had nothing to really worry about.. but if she didn't impress her grandparents, then her life could be instantly in shambles. She was terrified now and she wanted to fix all of it. She wondered if she could find anything to impress her parents and grandparents profoundly so they would just leave her alone.
Anastasia gave a small smirk. Did she really want to continue down that road? She sat there, legs crossed properly. ”Sure.. I mean.. what else would I be paying you for.” she said with a small laugh. ”I’m not sure what else there is to say..
