A normal week or Meili was cringe-worthy and hectic. Social work kept her mornings, afternoons, and evenings busy. She did a lot of paperwork, going on home visits to her foster kids; more specifically going to homes of potential kids that were going into the system. she was trying her hardest to make sure they didn’t come into the system. then there were her kids that were already in the system and they were mostly short visits just to see how everything is doing. At night things didn’t settle down. She went home, made dinner for her and her sisters, cleaned a little and played with them or helped with homework, then they got cleaned up and ready for bed and in bed by 8:30. By 9 o’ clock the “nanny”, who was just a lady who lived in the building who needed the extra cash and was good with the girls, plus she didn’t ask questions. Then she would leave. She would go a few blocks away to the loft she rented; it wasn’t the best, but since she did work on it and make it look decent, the landlord gave her a break on the rent, which was still more than she could really afford on just her salary. She didn’t mind though, it was better than having men know where she really lived and that kept the girls away from that destructive and twisted way of life. She would get herself prepped before one of her clients came over. She had a specific schedule for her four regulars. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, three of them had a given night; Friday and Saturday nights were double the rate and they rotated. Whoever didn’t have a single night during the week would have the weekends. If one of them cancelled then she had to go to a club, usually high dollar, and find a client for the night. those weren’t her favorite nights, but she had to do it. plus, after ten years, she was an expert on picking the kind of men that would be able and willing to pay. Today was a little different. One of her potential kids called her in hysterics. In that particular case, them mother was bi-polar and very upset that her children could be taken away for drug related reasons, child neglect, and child endangerment, and the boyfriend was abusive and dangerous to the mother and two children. the oldest was twelve and basically care for the youngest who was eight. because it was an emergency situation and the children were clearly in serious trouble, she got a rush court order to get them out of the house that day. At the house which was a rundown apartment building, one that reminded her about her past and gave her anxiety just getting near it. making it into the building wasn’t hard, even climbing the five flights of stairs was simple. but, when she went to the apartment door and someone finally answered, she was somewhat startled to see the boyfriend with a gun pointed to her face. she was hit with a horrible odor from the small apartment, the cries and screams coming from the apartment were unbearable. She tried to defuse the tension, but he refused to lower his gun and threatened to kill her if she didn’t leave. she didn’t want anyone to get hurt, not the kids or the mother, not herself. so, she had to call 911, this wasn’t the first time she had to call in police backup. maybe if she wasn’t in such a rush to get them out she would have brought one with her. she couldn’t pretend it was the first time a gun had been pulled on her; not at work… not in either work environment. she was very matter-of-fact while talking. ”Hello, this is Meili Wàn, I’m a social worker and need police back up to defuse a situation. The children will be removed from the residence. The boyfriend had a gun pulled when I knocked on the door.. and I have reason to believe that the children and mother are in danger.” she went on giving the address, floor number, and apartment number. She asked if they could send the closest unit available and quickly. As she waited, she made sure the hallway was clear and that from behind the corner of the wall she could see the apartment door. There were a continuous stream of yelling, cursing, and crying. She knew the cries were from the two girls and she desperately wanted to get in there and get them away from this place. On the call with the oldest girl, she had told her to get a bag ready with her things and the sister’s things. Clothes and other things if they absolutely needed it but they should only have just one bag. She promised she would come back if they needed something, but that they would not be coming back at the present time. Finally, after what seemed like forever, she heard footsteps and voices coming towards her. When she saw the two officers, she gave them a tight smile that still showed her dimples. ”Thank you for coming.” she said politely in her soft voice. She couldn’t watch as they got the door opened and they had to forcibly remove the boyfriend. He was on the ground and cuffed after a struggle. She watched as they took the crazed boyfriend out in handcuffs. She went in once he was gone. The mother was very unhappy and kept threatening her. Meili explained that she could easily get the officer back to the apartment to restrain her if she really needed to be. But, she hoped that they could make this as calm as possible, that the girls were already shaken up enough. She explained that she could petition the court in 90 days to get the girls back, but she would have to clean her act up, probably get a better apartment, get rid of the boyfriend, and have proof that she can care for her children, counseling and a decent job would be in order. In 90 days they could re-evaluate the situation. Once she got the girl’s stuff both girls just walked out, Meili had to carry the youngest out because she was still sobbing uncontrollably. the oldest was putting on a brave face. she wanted to make everything better. she needed to get the youngest calmed down first. she still needed a home for them, at least for the night, then in the morning she would be able to find a better place for them. she got the youngest calmed down and promised them lunch, she needed the time to find a place for them. she took them to a family diner and let them order whatever they wanted. they looked like they needed the food, she knew that was what started all of this, the youngest was caught stealing food from that school’s cafeteria. that’s when the teachers realized the girls weren’t getting food when they weren’t at school. that’s when Meili was put on their case. |
