CHARLOTTE ISABELLA HAYWOOD
[attr="class","apphoverbox"]
"please help me welcome tonight's special guest, charlotte haywood! this is the first interview she has agreed to do since the death of her husband, zachary." there was a murmur of collective "aww" coming from the audience. immediately, she regretted agreeing to do this. she wasn't ready. it was too soon. her heart clenched tightly as it usually did at the mention of zach. still, she placed on her much practiced smile and stepped out from the curtains. "thank you for having me" she said softly, shaking the host's hand before sitting down on the sofa. she crossed her ankles, back straight, hands folded on her knees. "tell us, charlotte, how are you feeling?" charlie gritted her teeth, not wanting to say something she would regret on national television. she had expected the question, of course. she had just never anticipated the wave of emotions it would bring on. but she had practiced the questions with her publicist the day before. she knew the answers by heart. "as good as one can be after what happened, but i'm doing my best." she answered, letting out a tentative smile. she could see the pity in the host's eyes. it seemed that's the only look she seemed to get these days. she was so sick of it. she was so sick of people telling her they were sorry. their pitied look, half hearted hugs wouldn't bring her husband back. and it killed her to know that he wasn't going to come back to her or their baby girl. "that's great to hear. would you like to tell us about him?" charlotte hesitated. that was a question she had not anticipated. they had not practiced this one and she was not sure how to answer. she bit on her lower lip before nodding slightly, "well zach is my complete opposite. he is ambitious and kind, and he has this smile that just lights up my world." she allowed herself to really smile now. anyone could see her eyes brightened from just talking about him. "as many of you know, i'm originally from england and it wasn't until three years ago that i moved here to new york city."
she lived there all her life. it was where she started her career. she had always been a fan of the water as a kid. her mother was the one who encouraged her to try surfing. and from then on, she just picked it up and was eventually competing at the young age of eight. she was then discovered by her agent at the tender age of eleven. her name wasn't really picked up until she was sixteen years old, where she won rookie of the year, making her the youngest female to hold the title. from then on, she was constantly competing. she had trained intensively with the men's surfing team as her sponsors were generally male dominated group. the only reason they had taken charlie in was because they had initially mistaken her nickname for a guy, but second because they saw the potential in her. in a few year's time, she had gained popularity throughout the surfing scene, and would later take on the title of "princess of waves." she was at her career high in her twenties. she won her first championship at twenty one, and then five more in the next consecutive years. she was the first woman to win six consecutive championships. many credited the sponsorship of her developed skills and style through her training with the male surfers. she never denied the claims made by the media, mainly because she could neither agree nor disagree. yes, it helped that she had spent so much training time with her male counterparts, but she also had to work really hard on her own to get to where she was. it wasn't all just rainbows and butterflies. her training was intense. if she wasn't at the gym working out, then she was out on the water, practicing. she was always on a strict diet, and kept on a tight schedule.
it was a surprise she had even managed to find zach in that crazy schedules of her's. their meeting had been completely accidental. "but zach and i had actually met in an airport in england. he was on leave from the us army, so he decided to visit his sister who moved to england for school. i, on the other hand, was just coming back from a competition, but then a storm hit, and no one was allowed to leave the building." it was a massive snow storm, and many people were stuck inside the airport. she remembered being frustrated because of all the traveling she had done, and was just generally exhausted from the competition. all she wanted to do was crawl into her warm bed in her cozy apartment. maybe drop by her parents' place and say hi to her family. she chuckled softly, more of a surprise to herself than the audience, "i was really gutted that day. i had just finished competing, a nine hour flight, and my luggage was nowhere to be seen. and then this stranger comes up behind me with this sheepish smile, and goes 'is this your luggage, ma'am?'" he had scared the bonkers out of her. she had thought that maybe he was some crazy fan looking for an autography. or maybe just a general creeper. "i thought he was a stalker, so my immediate response was to step away from him, but he goes 'are you miss charlotte haywood? the man at the counter said this luggage belonged to you. i must've mistaken yours for mine.'" he had surprised her because it was obvious that he had no idea who she was. something that didn't quite happen frequently in the uk. it was rare for someone to not know her, mainly because she was all over the news. something she hated greatly, but never mentioned. "he had no idea who i was, and i thought it was the most wonderful thing ever. we got to talk for a few hours before we were able to leave our separate ways. i thought i'd never see him again, but we were constantly bumping into each other on the streets." she had been reluctant to become his friend at first when he offered it. charlie was not the kind of person who trusted easily, especially because of her career. there had been many times people befriended her just to get their own fifteen minutes of fame, but zach had proved to her time and time again that he was not interested in that part of her life.
"we didn't really start dating until my mother passed away." he was there for her at the right moment and the right time. her mother's death affected her greatly. she loved her mom. she had always been charlie's number one fan, and supported her no matter what. her mother always encouraged her to follow her dreams, no matter how big, small, or ridiculous it was. nobody had believed that she'd ever become a professional surfer except her mom. everybody said it was an unconventional career. but her mom just said "screw them, prove them wrong, baby." and that was that. "he was my anchor. he was there for me when i needed someone the most, and i will be eternally grateful for that." she had thought that maybe this would be easier. she thought that she had known grief already. that it couldn't be so bad the second time around, but it wasn't. in fact, it was even harder. "zach was my other half. he completed me. he knew me better than i knew myself, and he never stopped believing in me. he was understanding and driven and silly. and above all else, he loved me for me, flaws and all." and now he was gone. he was only thirty two. still so young. "our relationship was tough. me having to travel for competitions, and him being deployed for months on end. sometimes we wouldn't see each other for a whole year, but we made it work." because love knew no distance. there was no boundary. love kept them together even when it was tearing them apart. they had married secretly when she was at the age of twenty five. no one had known about their marriage except for the witnesses. she hadn't wanted a big wedding because she knew that once the paparazzi got a wind of it, they would be all over their big day. they had said they would eventually have a big wedding with their family's attendance when they both settled down their careers. when she first fell pregnant, they thought it was time for them to move in together. somewhere convenient for the both of them. they decided on new york city. it was in the middle of everything, essentially. however, shortly after their move, she miscarried. at twenty eight, she became pregnant again, but she had gotten into a car accident and miscarried again. for a while, the two had given up hope on conceiving a child.
"despite having dated him for many years, we didn't get married until two years ago when he was on leave, and i took a hiatus from my career." it was a relatively small wedding with their friends and family. they had wanted to renew their vows, this time in front of the world to see. their wedding had its fifteen minutes of fame and then it was over quickly. "a year after that, i became pregnant, and now i have a beautiful baby girl by the name of anastasia." not only was her child the most precious thing in the world to her, but she was also charlotte's saving grace. she had, thankfully, been in labour when her father decided that he was going to marry a twenty three year old gold digging wh- she broke off her thought with a shake of her head. she didn't know what her father was thinking. he obviously wasn't bloody thinking. her new "step mother," who she refuses to call, was seven years younger than her. it was ridiculous to think her father was in love with this young thing. he was old enough to be her grandfather. it was disgusting. of course, the media had no trouble gobbling up that story when they first found out her father was marrying someone three times younger than him. charlotte, needless to say, did not attend the wedding.
she smiled sheepishly at the host, "i'm sorry, i'm rambling, aren't i?" the host gave her a sympathetic smile, but shook her head. charlotte was thankful the host hadn't asked her how zach passed. it wasn't something people needed to ask. everyone already knew. they saw the news. zach and his team had been ambushed. they were doomed the second they stepped into the building. everybody had seen the way it exploded. there was no way anyone would have survived that bomb. "no worries dear. why don't we move on, then? how about you tell us about your family? i, for one, know that the female fans are especially curious about your brother." she crinkled her nose in disgust for a moment, as she always did when someone mentioned their curiosity toward her twin brother. she loved her brother to death, but she never saw what the hype over him was about. then again, she supposed it was because he was her brother, and would never see him as anything else but the person who tore barbie's head from her body or the one who gave her head nudges. "well my family's relatively small. my mum passed away from pancreatic cancer, and my dad remarried last year as you all know." she tried to hide the disgust and grotesque out of her tone, but she was pretty sure she was failing in that department. she would never be able to talk about her father and her "step mother" without wanting to throw up. "carter is my twin brother. he is older than me by eighteen minutes, and will never let me forget it." she allowed herself to roll her eyes this time, eliciting a laugh from the audience. "he is in the royal airforce, which i have to admit, is pretty cool and amazing, but don't tell him that." she cracked a smile, finding it easier now that they weren't talking about zach. maybe this wasn't so bad after all. and she supposed it helped that she had practiced for hours with her publicist. she was actually relatively shy and timid. it wasn't common knowledge as she was mostly forced to do meet and greets and be a people person. she was bubbly and friendly, but that was only when someone else starts the conversation first. she was never good at making friends. wouldn't know how to start a conversation even if they handed her the directions on a silver platter. "i love him to death, and i guess we're equally protective of one another. we'd do anything for each other. i mean, we don't share the weird twin bond or whatever, but we're always there for each other and that's all that matters." she didn't dare mention that he was currently visiting her. mainly because she tended to shield her family from the limelight. she knew how nosy they were. she didn't want them pestering her family. if she could avoid the media, she would at all cost to protect her family from it.
"now, charlotte, tell me, are the rumours true? are you retiring from being a surfer?" this has got everyone's attention. they were all genuinely curious. she had certainly thought about it, but had never actually made the decision. she shook her head, "i think i've got a few more years in me." and if that didn't work, then she could go into coaching. in the mean time, she was good with endorsing sports brand. "and anyway, i've been quite busy lately with the swimwear line i'm endorsing." her sponsor group had always had ties with the swimwear companies, but they've got her modelling for that company many times to milk all the fame she's still got. it wasn't something she was ecstatic about doing, but it wasn't something she would turn down either. "if all else fails, i think i would love to become a coach one day." the host nodded understandingly, "well i believe this is all the time we have for today. thank you so much for joining us today, charlotte" she smiled at the host, standing up as well as the audience clapped, "the pleasure is all mine, thank you for having me."
