and with a broken wing
there were very few nights where samantha lancaster found herself without anything to do. even on those nights when ethan was with his father, like tonight, she was always working. friday nights were some of her busier nights at the strip bar. or sometimes she was even studying for some test she had in one of her college classes. but it was spring break so she didn't have any classes and her boss had forced her to take the night off. and it was at these times, when she had nothing to do, that she remembered why she always kept herself busy. she didn't like the idea of having free time. there was too much time to think, too much time to wonder about how she'd let her life get to this point. she'd never imagined that she'd ever be where she was now. her marriage to garrett wasn't supposed to end, she wasn't supposed to be a single mother, and she definitely wasn't supposed to be working as a stripper. her parents would be ashamed if the knew. she had just told them that she was divorced and pursuing her vet degree again. they accepted it without question. which almost hurt, almost. but sam had always been the good daughter. if she told her parents she was a stripper, they probably wouldn't have believed her. they would have thought she was joking and would have started cracking up. and she wasn't sure how she would react to seeing that. she had never meant to disappoint her parents, and she never should have left. her entire reasons for for coming to new york were shot now. not that she could leave. maybe this concrete jungle wasn't a ranch, but it was home now.
and this was exactly why she didn't have too much free time. because then there was too much time for her to criticize her life and her choices in life. sam looked around the empty living room of her apartment. the floor was littered with ethan's toys and the coffee table had all her textbooks piled onto it. she hadn't felt like cleaning after dropping ethan off with his dad. it was so hard sometimes, getting the energy to do anything when really, you're life wasn't exactly what you'd planned it out to be. the only thing she could be proud of sometimes was her ability to get up every morning, her son, and the fact that she had decided to continue her college education. she'd come to new york with a lover, and now found herself alone. her parents had always raised her to be an independent woman, to never rely on anyone but herself. and this particular lesson was one she learned well. she hated relying on anyone for anything, not if she could do it herself. but if there was one thing she missed, it was having someone to curl up with when the nights got particularly lonely, like tonight. she wouldn't have minded having the company of anyone right now. it was probably about then that she remembered having a chat online with some random guy. he'd mentioned a bar that was supposed to be a really good place to go. she'd managed to wiggle the address out of him. she glanced at the clock, it was about 6:30 p.m. she wasn't sure why time was relevant, because most bars in new york didn't close till well after midnight. she hopped off the couch and made a beeline to her bathroom.
it only took her about a half hour to get dressed and straighten her, and even then, most of her time was spent trying to pick out her clothes. she'd stocked up on what she deemed to be bar worthy clothes after she turned 21, as garrett had liked to tote around his little trophy wife. she through on a black tank top and a lace form fitting overshirt that was also black. she paired it with a darker wash - also form fitting - pair of jeans. she finished off the look with a pair of black wedges, hoop earrings, and a diamond necklace that she'd once gotten as an anniversary present from garrett. once last glance at the mirror revealed that she did in fact look great, so she grabbed her purse and was out the door. by the time she arrived at the bar, it was about 7:30 and still on the empty side. as she walked in, she felt a lot of the eyes fall on her and most lingered as she walked to the bar. being a blue-eyed blonde woman, she'd grown quite accustomed to this response. she ignored them all and made her way over to the bar, her gaze sliding over one of the bartenders. he was talking to a blond girl who looked a little too young to be in the bar. perhaps he was telling her off, but then she saw the way he was looking at her, the complete awe in his gaze and she had to turn away. sam always hated jealousy, but she couldn't stop being jealous of how happy they looked. she sat down at the bar, facing away from the couple. she was greeted by another bartender - the only other male bartender she could see. yeah, i know, its kind of gross, huh? he had made a face. what can i get you? sam smiled politely under his clearly admiring glance. this was something she'd grown used to as a stripper, especially as his gaze went to the plunging v neck of her shirt. any red wine? girly drinker, should have guessed. despite his comment, he turned around and eventually delivered a glass of wine that she sipped. so, i've never seen you here before...? you sure about that? haven't you lost track yet? she hadn't meant to sound mean, but he looked snubbed. i was referred by a friend. she said by way of conciliation.
