COME LITTLE LIGHT come away to the darkness
It was a Thursday afternoon. School had just let out about an hour ago. He'd spent half an hour doing homework and studying, getting all of it out of the way fairly easily since he'd done most of it while he was still in school. There was just one thing he hadn't touched and that was the script he was supposed to be memorizing. He'd gotten it on Monday and ever since then Christian had been asking him to hang out after school to read through lines. Of course Hayden refused, how could he not? Christian was a guy. An attractive guy. So there was no way Hayden could allow himself to be alone with him, ever. He'd already nearly gotten in trouble when his phone had gone off last night during dinner (he'd forgotten to put it away in his room) but thankfully his father was too busy talking to his mother about something to notice Hayden sneaking out his phone under the table and deleting all of the messages from Christian. He hadn't wanted to give away his phone number, he wasn't supposed to without Daddy's permission, but Hayden also had trouble telling people no so, in the end, he'd ended up with Christian's number programmed in his phone. Well, he was under "C" because Hayden was too scared to put his actual name but not brave enough to put a fake name. Because that was lying. And he'd lied enough just by using his phone at the dinner table and being sneaky so, as punishment, he'd returned to his room after the meal was over and made small lines across his forearms. They weren't deep, really just scratches, but they were enough to remind him that good boys did not tell lies.
But he wasn't home now. He was at the barn using the outdoor ring that was mainly used for dressage lessons even though it wasn't an actual dressage ring. There were no jumps allowed here and it was rarely used so Hayden figured it would be best to go there. He led his mare, Killer, through the gate, latching it behind him, a small smile on his lips as he placed a gentle kiss on the mare's muzzle. She nudged him, causing the pixie-like boy to giggle. He was his most relaxed here, with Killer, with no one else around. He wasn't thinking about his weight despite how his riding pants clung to his calves and thighs and bum. He wasn't worried about anything. This was something easy, something that he knew, even though his body was slowly growing weaker and weaker from lack of food, he could still ride. So he dragged the little mounting block over to Killer's left side, gathered his reins in his left hand, left foot in the stirrup, and swung himself up. He was quite flexible still though not as much as he used to be. But he didn't want to think about that. Instead, he gently squeezed Killer's sides with his legs, clucking at her until she moved at a forward walk, her head already lowered comfortably.
He took her around the ring three times in each direction, doing circles to get her to bend and stretch herself out, before urging the mare into a trot. She refused, at first, shaking her head and snorting, but a sharp kick to her ribs had her moving forward. Hayden smiled to himself, happy to be back in the saddle, talking quietly to the mare as they went around the ring at a trot, doing serpentines and circles. He extended her gate and then collected it, scolding the gray mare whenever she kicked out or didn't listen. She was usually a bit more difficult to deal with while warming up. It was what made less experienced riders wary of her. She gave little "half bucks," kicking out a hind hoof, but rarely did she ever do a full on buck and she absolutely never reared, at least not while she was being handled. Out in the field was another story.

School had been eh, he had been a bit distracted for the most part of the day. He had had a little falling out with a good friend, it was almost entirely his fault and he knew that, but he still did his best to argue that he had good reason behind doing and saying what he had. But really he was just looking out for himself and at the time he hadn't thought about how that would hurt someone he cared about. But it was done now and all he could do was try to make things right but at this point he wasn't sure how to do such a thing. Having secrets was such hard work, especially when the school bitch knew it and threatened to tell everyone if he didn't behave. He hated it but in his mind there wasn't much he could do about it without everything going to shit and that was something he really didn't want. While his day at school had been rather mediocre there was a small spark of excitement for his after school activities. He had, after many days of asking and asking some more, gotten Hayden to agree to not only swap phone numbers but to give him the address of the barn where the other boy was allowed to be other than home and school. He still thought it was strange and not fair that a parent thought they could restrict their child so much on where they could be and when and well basically everything - his parents weren't like that, in fact he tended to get away with a lot because they didn't pay that much attention to what happened around them, that and they had too many cars to keep track of them all the time. He had gotten in a lot of trouble once for sneaking out and taking one of the said cars, but he continued to do it. Today though he had asked his mother if he could take one of them to get meet someone for something school related. She had said yes and he had left almost immediately - after changing from the clothes he had worn to school and into a simple pair of dark jeans and a white tee, a light grey jacket over the top.
He had sent a message ahead of time to let Hayden know that he was on his way - he wasn't sure whether they had actually agreed to meet or not but he decided that it was a good idea and was going to be there anyway, plus the new kid had a habit of not making such plans and seemed to not want to spend any one on one time with him at all. Of course that bugged Christian, it got to him when someone seemed to have an issue with him and wouldn't say so and instead just avoided him. He was not okay with such actions. He programmed the address that he had been given into his phone's navigation and headed off to this barn that he had been told about. Once he took the wrong turn and instantly blamed the navigation when in fact it was his fault - he hadn't been paying attention (his mind had wandered to the issue he was having with that friend who was mad at him) and had to turn around and go back. But he got there eventually and when he did he spotted his new friend (were they friends, he wanted them to be friends so he'd call his as such) on a horse and riding around in a ring.
Slowly he got out of the car and wandered over to said ring, leaning on the fence and watching what was going on inside. He wondered whether Hayden had gotten his message since he was on horseback and he doubted that he'd have his phone on him while riding - because what if it went off and startled that horse, that could end badly. Christian didn't have much experience with horses, while his family had had many pets over the years a horse was never one of them. Though he did sort of wish that someone had wanted a horse at some point, they were majestic creatures, and rather pretty more often that not too. He continued leaning on the fence, waiting to be noticed.

COME LITTLE LIGHT come away to the darkness
When he was riding, he was so calm, so relaxed, his body moving with Killer's motions, rising out of the saddle every time her outside shoulder moved forward and sitting when it went back. He was gentle, not landing too hard, lifting out of the saddle almost as soon as he sat down. His hands were gentle, his grip light on the reins, and he let them get long, confident that he could control the mare without keeping a tight hold on the reins. After awhile of trotting around the ring, doing different warm ups, he brought her down to an energetic walk and she snorted, tossing her head and chewing the bit, tail flicking. Hayden knew that she was bored of just going around the ring, Killer lived for jumping, she loved it almost more than Hayden did. He'd caught her once going over a little crossrail that had been left set up in the field she was out in. She loved it, and she was fantastic at it, but he just... didn't think he could right now. He was just tired, was all. Even now, walking around for a moment, he was yawning, a gloved hand reaching up to cover his mouth before collecting the reins again and sitting up straighter. He would just canter for a bit and then hop off.
Clucking at the gray mare, Hayden took a deep breath and gave his legs a firm squeeze. Killer listened instantly, of course, springing into an easy canter and Hayden smiled, sitting deep in the saddle and humming quietly to himself. He was as close to happy as he could get these days. He was confident. Calm.
Until he turned the corner and saw a familiar face watching him.
Everything happened so quickly, quickly enough that he wasn't sure what happened. He tensed up, legs squeezing Killer's sides, body hunching over, eyes wide and fearful as he stared at Christian. His arms and hands tensed, fingers clenching around the reins and tugging on Killer's mouth, and that was more than enough to set her off. The mare had always been sensitive so when she felt her rider grow unsure of himself, she wanted him off, so she ducked her head down, snorted harshly, and kicked her hind legs up and out. Normally, it would take more than a single buck to unseat Hayden, who had been riding for years, but the seventeen year old was already unbalanced so as soon as Killer bucked, he was gone. He let go of the reins out of instinct, it was what he had always been taught for when falling off, and closed his eyes.
He landed heavily on his back, letting out a pained grunt, and then falling silent and still, eyes still closed. His ears were ringing but he knew that was probably from the moment of panic and not from falling. He'd had many other falls that were ten times as worse as this one. Normally he would get up right away, shaking himself before hopping back up into the saddle, but now he had an audience, and there were so many thoughts running through his head all at once. This outfit, for one, made him look fat. His pants were so tight and so was his shirt. And what if someone saw Christian here? What if Daddy found out that Christian had come to see him? Maybe if he just laid really, really still, the older boy would walk away and forget about him.
